VISUALLY LOVELY {12}

Over the holiday weekend I saw the movie Frank, it was pretty weird, but I loved it. One thing I really loved about Frank was the movie poster. In the beginning of my career I designed movie posters. So I am always on the lookout for nicely designed posters. Knowing what goes on in making a poster, I have a bigger appreciation for them. So I decided to put together a short list of some of my favorites (classics and current).

THE MOVIE THAT STOLE MY HEART

image
image

I know I am really late on watching The Grand Budapest Hotel. I finally saw it a couple weekends ago and feel completely in love. Wes Anderson is a genius with beautiful imagery, colors and overall design.

I especially loved all the graphic elements, from the packaging and fonts for the Mendel’s shop. I even loved the small details like the book carried in the opening scene.

I think one of the best parts of this film was the beautiful symmetry represented throughout the film. Although that is his signature trademark it just shinned in this film.

I love when a movie inspires me, it doesn’t happen that often but when it does it sticks with me for a while. It is a strong statement to say, but I think this was one of his best films to date, although Royal Tenenbaums is still my favorite.

IN THE STUDIO: CURRENT/ELLIOTT

Normally I don’t post work from my full time job, but I couldn’t resists. I am extremely happy with the launch of the new Current/Elliott site. It is very clean, with large images and easier navigation. I love that you can choose how many images to view on each page. There was also the launch of a new category called Loved and Found, which was a fun section to design. I was able to be more creative with the layout and actual photography of the items. Since Current/Elliott is known for its vintage esthetic I was able to carry that idea through in this new category.

This was also the first time I had to design a site so it is responsive (it can work on all platforms mobile, tablets). There was a huge learning curve designing for large format and making sure it would work when scaled down. There was a lot of back and forth for each page design, but now I feel like a pro.

THE LOVE OF VINYL

image

Since the introduction of iTunes, Spotify and other streaming music programs, buying tangible albums has started to become obsolete. I am a big fan of vinyl. I love collected oldies, but I have really started buying current albums. There are some really great pieces of art on a lot of these albums, but it is also the actual vinyl that has become a hidden surprise.

I have picked a few of my favs, some I own and others on my wish list. Washed Out is first, not only are both of their albums have great design, but for their Paracosm album the vinyl is purple. I love being surprised when I see vinyl that isn’t your standard black.

image

Beach House is another great one, their cover is very simple, but the vinyl is all white. There is something so nice about an all white vinyl record spinning on my turntable.

image

Rhye’s Open, is on my wish list. This album was a special release for Record Store day and I wish I knew about it before hand. The vinyl for this album is CLEAR! How cool is that?

image

Future Islands’ In The Fall another wish list addition, I love the fall foliage imagery and the vinyl for this one is blue.

image

Lastly from my wish list Smashing Pumpkins’ Siamese Dream. The tricky thing about this album is there are some that have a red or pink vinyl. That is the one I want, so it will be challenge to find. But I am up for the challenge!

I LOVE VINYL!!

IN THE STUDIO: HIP STUDIO FITNESS CHALLENGE MANUAL

A few months ago I had the pleasure to work with the lovely ladies of HIP Studio on their highly successful fitness challenge manual. It has been awhile since I’ve done layouts, so I jumped at the chance to work on this project.

The HIP ladies are a dream client; they gave me free range to design. In some cases that can be even more of a challenge.I wanted to mimic the experience of walking into their studio through this manual. I used their bright colors, and studio shots to bring more focus into the piece.

Layouts can be very challenging, you have to make sure there is a constant flow from page to page, or in this case a swipe (it was completely electronic).

I am so happy with the finished product, I definitely want to do more layouts.

DESIGN'VY #12

I realize I haven’t posted designs that I love in awhile. I came across this awesome monster alphabet by Chris Dedinsky and instantly started searching for the purchase button. I love typography and always wished my drawing skills were good enough to create something like this. It definitely inspires me to practice; I use to draw all the time when I was younger but slowly stopped as I got older. In the meantime I will just enjoy these monsters.

ARTIST CRUSH: YAYOI KUSAMA

I have been waiting for this issue to come out, because of this amazing spread of George Clooney covered in polka dots. I nearly fell on the floor when I saw these photos. I am a big fan of Yayoi Kusama’s artwork; I loved the collaboration she did with Louis Vuitton. Before I even knew about her collab with W Magazine I immediately knew it was her artwork covering Mr. Clooney. My only negative comment is, there should be more of those images! I am looking forward to flipping through this magazine when it comes to the office.

I am happy to share my latest wedding invite design. I had the pleasure to design a beautiful, elegant wedding package for Marisa & Christopher. They are such a lovely couple and I really wanted to show that in their invites. I wanted to play off of the chevron stripe pattern and the soft script font. Bringing in the colors of her bridesmaids dresses, with a nice touch of gold.

This particular project was even more special, because I also designed their menus, thank you cards, thank you note card, table and escort cards. Everything was nice and cohesive from beginning to end.

Thank you again Marisa & Christopher for allowing me to be apart of your special day.

INSPIRATION

I know I have been a little MIA the past few weeks. Things are starting to pick up again, new freelance projects and squeezing in some adventures along the way.

I wanted to write about inspiration. I started writing this post last week, and walked away from it. Good thing I did, because I was chatting with a friend about inspiration and he said something that was quite beautiful; “Staying in an inspired state is one of the biggest challenges in life and I think people that can do that, are the ones that make a difference as they often have the ability to inspire others through it.” It got me thinking about inspiration and what I do to keep that fire going.

image

When starting a new project I always try to get out and get inspired. It is so easy to sit in front of the computer and click endlessly through my bookmarked websites. It’s nice to get out and be inspired by nature, architecture and even people. I started scrolling through my photos on my phone; I realized I have a ton of sunset pictures. You can get some amazing color combos from those spectacular sunsets.

image

I feel that you can find inspiration in the most random things. I found a photo I took of a container ship. I loved how the giant containers created this cool color grid.

image

Sometimes I will even visit on of my favorite places in LA Eames house in Pacific Palisades. It is such a beautiful space, the views, the architecture it’s pretty great.

image
image

Even a recent visit to Vegas can be inspiring. I visited the Neon museum and was surrounded by typography and color. It is filled with visual eye candy; I think my brain almost exploded.

image

I think I have created a new motto be open to everything; you never know what might come out of it.

ARTIST CRUSH: MAPLEXO

I love anything involving skateboarding. I have been thinking about creating a piece of skateboard art above my bed. Thanks to my friend Ben, he introduced me to this rad company called MapleXO.  They create beautiful jewelry, iphone cases (I need one), and special one of kind pieces all out of recycled skateboard decks. Since I am particle to stripes I immediately gravitated towards these pieces above.

They also have an instagram page that showcases even more amazing pieces and the stores behind them. I am officially a fan!

DESIGN'VY #10

It is no surprise that I love ice cream. So when I came across this extremely cute identity for this company Eyescream I nearly fell out of my chair. Designed by M Barcelona, this entire identity has everything you need, cute little ice cream characters, super clean menu and who doesn’t love your ice cream staring back at you. I only wish this company was in the U.S. it is such a great concept.
